The Big Strathie Bike Ride

Aberdeen Uni 62.4 Miles

It was a mild start to the morning, dark but 9 degrees centigrade felt warm for the off at 5:00am from the clubhouse.  It was decided that the dual carriageway would be quiet enough to try for Stonehaven before heading for the quieter roads and cycle tracks.

After a couple of stops we reached Laurencekirk and it was beginning to get light and busy, Wooden Cock and The Major managed to persuade the Captain that it was time to get of the busy road and head for the countryside.

Auchenblae then Stonhaven via the back roads was bliss - no traffic but the hills were not to the Captains liking and it was slow going.  After Stonehaven it was back to the dual carriageway at the Captains assistance but it was hellish busy and quite a bit dangerous, it was then decidsed to croos the carraigway and head for a dirt track to a strip of tarmac that led to Portlethen, a pretty horrible trip being buffeted by the backdraft of passing artics - the most miserable 10 miles of the whole year.

At Portlethen we came across the Sustrans Route 1 which took us round allot of windy roads much to the Captains annoyance into Aberdeen where the sun came out, it was a great sight to come round corner at Balnagask lighthouse and see the busy harbour bathed in Sunshine.

From the harbour it was an easy ride to Kings, but Wooden Cock, desperate for some speed, managed to race an old Opel Manta  and beat it up the hill to the traffic lights at Union Street.

For the first time we arrived in time for lunch and a couple of pints in the Bobin Mill across the road from Kings.

There was only one winner of this weeks 50/50 Craig Anderson picking up £8.50 guessing 62.4 miles on the nose.  To learn more and enter the next 50/50 CLICK HERE.

Next up is Harris Acd FP's in Dundee on the 9th of April followed by Glenrothes on the 16th, if you would like to join us please get in touch with us by clicking here.

The monies raised will be split between the Everyman Charity and the club where the money will go directly towards an extension to the clubhouse benefiting both the juniors, seniors and all who come who come along to watch the matches and support the club.

Everyman is a campaign that was launched by The Institute of Cancer Research in 1997.  Everyman's mission is to stamp out testicular and prostate cancer, more can be found out by clicking on their logo.

We aim to have a variety of sponsorship opportunities through the season.  There will be a book behind the bar where a donation and an overall season accumulator competition can be entered.  A separate match 50/50 book will be available the week before all the away matches where you can guess the distance travelled for £1.

All club members and supporters are more than welcome to join in any of the rides, we are also looking for volunteers to assist with transport and back up.
